The General Delegation of the PLO to the United States denounces Israel’s decision to build new settlements in Jerusalem. Israel declared today that it plans to construct over 450 settlement housing units in the illegal settlement of Ramat Shlomo, as part of a larger plan to construct 1,000 additional settlement housing units.
The Israeli government’s decision to build new settlements directly contradicts Prime Minister Netanyahu’s statements concerning his support for the two-state solution, made earlier this month during his meeting with President Barack Obama. Israeli decisions and actions are part of a pattern of total disregard for the United States’ and the International Community’s position regarding the illegal Israeli settlements.
The recent announcements indicate beyond any doubt that the current Israeli government is not sincere or genuine about ending its occupation. Instead, it is taking steps to consolidate the occupation and its settlement enterprise. This runs contrary to the objectives of the United States and the international community to reach an end to the conflict and realize the two state solution.
