The General Delegation of the PLO to the US strongly condemns the approval of the construction of 1,500 new settlement units in East Jerusalem by the Israeli committee on zoning and planning.

Ambassador Maen Rashid Areikat said that “this announcement proves beyond any doubt that the Israeli government is not interested in ending the conflict with the Palestinian people.” By doing this, “the Israeli government is revealing its real face of occupation, expansion, and defiance of international law,” added the Ambassador.

The approval to construct more settlement units comes just days following a wide international condemnation of Israel’s recent decision to pursue construction in the E-1 area, threatening the contiguity of East Jerusalem, and prejudicing the outcome of any future negotiations. Given the recent global overwhelming recognition of Palestine at the United Nations, this decision is yet another indication of Israel’s defiance of international consensus regarding illegal settlement activity.

The General Delegation of the PLO to the US urges the United States and the international community to take a firm and decisive stance in calling on Israel to comply with previous agreements and international law. This Israeli policy of land grabbing and expansion will undoubtedly render the feasibility of two states obsolete.
